When my mother was young, there was a time when sugar and other goods could no longer be imported into Iraq due to UN sanctions in 1990. Instead, my mother ate dates, which were sweet and abundant. This story made me wonder whether the US would ever invade Iraq for its dates, rather than oil.

My mother’s song was exhibited in Love Song (2024) at Bus Projects, Melbourne.
